Evaluating Web Sites

Today, I would like for you to review the tutorial on Web Site Evaluation.

The last slide contains the first part of your assignment. I have shared with you in Google Docs the Web Site Evaluation Checklist that you will need to complete for each you have been asked to evaluate. Make sure that you save each document to your P: drive. If someone did not receive a shared copy of the document, please email it to them.

After you have completed the checklists, summarize your findings for each site and then explain why the site is reliable or why it is not.

Lastly, create flash cards with Quizlet for terms that you feel may be relevant.

Online Safety and Social Networking

For the past two days, we've been talking about Online Safety and you have just finished watching three videos at http://www.netsmartz.org/:  Julie's Journey, Tracking Teresa, and Amy's Choice.

Please comment on this post your response to the questions below:
  1. In your opinion, why aren't many teens concerned with giving out personal information online?
  2. At what point in the Amy's Choice video, do you believe that Amy regretted sharing her personal information?  What were the consequences of her sharing her personal information?
  3. If a friend confides in you that he or she was thinking of meeting in person someone that they met online, what would you say and/or do?
After you have commented on this post, do your own search and find a news article related to someone being victimized by a person they met online.  Summarize that article and share your initial reaction to the article as well as ways you feel this could have possibly been prevented.  Post the summary and your thoughts on your personal blog in a post titled "Online Safety."

Google

For the past two days, we've been watching The World According to Google which gives us an in-depth look at the beliefs and ideologies of the organization.  Google recently made an announcement related to their privacy policy which has literally caused a global stir.

The first part of your assignment is to find three (3) differences between Google's old privacy policy and the policy that becomes effective on March 1, 2012.  Next, you will need to find a news article from the past two weeks related to Google's new privacy policy.  Lastly, after both summaries are completed, you are to write either a rebuttal or commentary paragraph in response to the article that you read (rebuttal = disagree, commentary = agree).

Add a new post titled "Google" on your personal blog that includes the above summaries and your rebuttal or commentary.  Please include a link to the article.

  2. Why is Creative Commons licensing an important development for sharing digital information?
  3. Would you allow others to use your photos?
  4. What licenses would you apply and why?
